TJU Syllabus for Chinese Lexicology

1. Course Description

This course is a selected coursefor students who are majored in Chinese Language and Literature. The course will introduce the basic theories and of Chinese Lexicology and exercise the basic analytical techniques, which help to improve students’ understanding skills and analytical skills of modern Chinese, and the course will lay a theoretical base for the related teaching and researching work in the future.

Through the course, students will gain a better understanding of Chinese Lexicology, and have more interests in researches in related fields. The course will help to improve the overall operational capability of Chinese, as well as the observation skills and analytical skills of language phenomena.

2. Requirements

As a separated selective course, Chinese Lexicology course will focus on the detailed instruction of lexicology part in Modern Chinese. The course will improve students’ understanding and research of Chinese lexicology. Topics will cover the basic theories and information of lexicology, and exercises will cover the analytical abilities of daily phenomena of social life.

3. Topics

The course will be divided into thirteen chapters, including:

Chapter One: Instruction to Chinese Lexicology, which includes two sections, covers the definition of Chinese Lexicology and its research contents, the current situations and research directions. Chapter Two: Chinese Word & Vocabulary, which has three sections, covers the Chinese word, Chinese semanteme, Chinese morpheme and Chinese vocabulary. Chapter Three: The structure of Chinese Word, which has two sections, covers the syllable features of single-morpheme word and the structure of composite word. Chapter Four: Lexical Meaning has four sections, includes the nature of meaning and its composition, monoseme, polyseme and homophone, synonym, near-synonym and antonym, as well as the development of lexical meaning. Chapter Five: Dictionary, which has three sections, covers the types of dictionary, the paraphrasis of word and lexicography, etc.

Chapter Six: Word Formation & Word Creation, which has three sections, includes the ambiguity between word formation and word creation, the classification of word formation and the classification of word creation. Chapter Seven:Double Syllableof Modern Chinese, which has two sections, is a special subject on the causes of double syllable development of modern Chinese, the Three-Character structure, and the double syllable tendency. Chapter Eight: Loan Words, which has three sections, covers the research survey of loan words in Chinese, the word-building of these loan words, and their influence on Chinese word-formation. Chapter Nine: Overlap of Words & Overlapping Words, which has three sections, introduces the reiterative and overlapping words, and Chinese reiterative and overlapping words. Chapter Ten: Abbreviation, which has four sections, introduces the shortened form and the determination of abbreviation, the scope of abbreviation and the structural features of its formation, as well as the normative questions.

Chapter Eleven: Idiom & Proverb, which has three sections, covers the introduction to fixed expressions, the double-level meanings, and the classification between idiom and proverb. Chapter Twelve: Lettered Word, which has three sections, introduces the causes and features of lettered word, the inner structure of it and its context. Chapter Thirteen: New Words, which has three sections, covers the causes of neology, the structure of new words and its researching methods.
