Application Guide for the Ph.D. Program in Country and Area Studies at Tianjin University 2026

In accordance with the Tianjin University Doctoral Graduate Student Admission Prospectus 2026 and based on the requirements of the School of Foreign Languages, the following admission procedures are hereby established:

I. Applicable Candidates

These procedures apply to candidates applying for the 2026 Ph.D. program at the School of Foreign Languages, Tianjin University through the Application-based Admission Scheme.

II. Application Requirements

Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria specified in the Tianjin University 2026 Doctoral Graduate Student Admission Prospectus.

III. Program Duration and Tuition

The standard program duration is 4 years. Tuition fees shall be implemented in accordance with the Tianjin University Doctoral Graduate Student Admission Prospectus 2026.

Our Ph.D. Program in Country and Area Studies includes five orientations:

  • Theory and Methodology in Country and Area Studies

  • Thematic Studies in Country and Area Studies (Research on Country and Area Law)

  • Comparative Studies in Country and Area Studies (Comparative Literature and Cross-cultural Studies)

  • Exchanges and Mutual Learning between Chinese and Foreign Civilizations (International Communication and Mutual Understanding)

  • Global and Regional Governance (Science & Technology Policy and Global Governance)

Note: Subject to change; the regulations in effect during the year of enrollment shall prevail.

V. Scholarships and Financial Aid

Implementation in accordance with the provisions of the Tianjin University Doctoral Graduate Student Admission Prospectus 2026.

VI. Application Review Process

A. Application Phase

Our school conducts regular doctoral admissions during the spring semester (March-April 2026). The application process and requirements follow the procedures outlined in the Tianjin University Doctoral Graduate Student Admission Prospectus 2026. Please pay close attention to the application deadlines and submit all materials within the specified timeframe. Late submissions will not be accepted.

1. Qualification Review

After the application deadline, the School of Foreign Languages' the Application Review Committee will evaluate applicants' research potential and fundamental qualifications based on submitted materials, assigning specific scores (total 100 points; scores below 60 indicate failure to pass review). Applicants passing this review may proceed to the Evaluation phase. Review criteria include:

  • Research Proposal: 20%

  • Publications: 50%

  • Academic Records: 30%

2. On-site Confirmation

The School will organize on-site confirmation for candidates who pass the qualification review. Candidates must bring original and photocopied application materials (as specified in the Tianjin University Doctoral Degree Graduate Student Admission Prospectus 2026) to the designated location within the timeframe set by the School to complete on-site confirmation procedures. Specific arrangements will be announced online.

B. Evaluation Phase

Evaluation: Consisting of two processes: Language Evaluation and Comprehensive Evaluation:

Language Evaluation:

1. Candidates meeting any of the following criteria may be exempt from the language Evaluation:

English

(1) Test for English Majors Grade 8;

(2) National College English Test Band 6 score of 550 or above;

(3) TOEFL score of 85 or above;

(4) IELTS score of 6.5 or higher (with no band below 6.0);

(5) GRE score of 1200 or above (or 310 or above under the new scoring system);

(6) Certificate equivalent to CEFR C1 or above.

Russian

(1) Test for Russian Majors Grade 4;

(2) National Russian Test Level 6 (CRT6);

(3) Russian Language Proficiency Test (TRKI) Level 2 or above.

Japanese

(1) Test for Japanese Majors Grade 4;

(2) National College Japanese Test Level 6 (CJT6);

(3) Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 or above.

German

(1) Test for German Majors Grade 4;

(2) National College German Test Level 6 (CGT6);

(3) Certificate at CEFR B2 level or above (e.g., DSH, TestDaF).

French

(1) Test for French Majors Grade 4;

(2) National University French Level 6 (CFT6);

(3) Certificate at CEFR B2 level or above (e.g., DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF).

Spanish

(1) Test for Spanish Majors Grade 4;

(2) DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) B2 or higher;

(3) SIELE (Spanish Language Proficiency Test) B2 or higher.

Arabic

(1) Test for Arabic Majors Grade 4;

(2) CATTI Translation Certificate.

Other Languages: Certificate equivalent to CEFR B2 or a higher level.

Foreign Candidates must meet the requirement of Chinese Proficiency Level specified by the university.

2. Applicants not meeting the above recognition standards must take the language Evaluation organized by the school, which consists of a written test and an interview. Test scores must meet the school's passing threshold.

3. Only applicants meeting the above language requirements are eligible to proceed to the comprehensive Evaluation phase. The aforementioned scores will not be included in the final total score.

Comprehensive Evaluation:

1. Evaluation Procedure

The Evaluation is organized by the school, with expert panels formed by discipline or research focus conducting evaluations. The process comprises two parts: a comprehensive written examination and a comprehensive competency interview.

(1) Comprehensive Written Examination: includes Basic Knowledge Test and Orientation Test. Basic Knowledge Test assesses fundamental theories and comprehensive knowledge in Country and Area Studies. The Orientation Test assesses professional knowledge in one of the orientations based on the applicant's choice.

(2) Comprehensive Interview: includes personal aptitude demonstration, evaluation of professional language listening and speaking skills, presentation of research proposal, and responses to questions.

2. Scoring Method

All scores are calculated on a 100-point scale.

(1) Comprehensive Written Exam Score = Basic Knowledge Test × 50% + Orientation Test × 50%

(2) Total Score = Comprehensive Written Exam Score × 50% + Comprehensive Interview Score × 50%

C. Admission Phase

1. Admission Rules

Rankings are conducted separately for fulltime candidates and candidates who study for a degree while working. The School admits candidates based on their total scores in descending order for each supervisor they applied to. In case of identical total scores, candidates are ranked by their comprehensive interview scores. Candidates scoring below 60 points in either the comprehensive written exam or the comprehensive interview are deemed unqualified and will not be admitted. The proportion of doctoral candidates who study for a degree while working admitted by our School is generally controlled within 10% of the enrollment plan.

2. Admission Waitlist

Should vacancies remain, candidates may be waitlisted for admission upon mutual agreement between the supervisor and candidate, provided they pass the required evaluations.

VII. Supervision Mechanism

(1) School of Foreign Languages Review and Supervision Panel:

An expert review and supervision panel comprising no fewer than five doctoral supervisors shall be established to conduct comprehensive supervision and supervision throughout the doctoral admissions selection process.

(2) Proposed Admission Announcement:

Doctoral admissions shall be conducted fairly and impartially. Following Evaluations, the total scores and proposed admission list of candidates will be publicly displayed on the school website as required, subject to public supervision.

To ensure enrollment quotas are fulfilled and maintain the integrity of admissions, candidates who wish to withdraw their proposed admission status must do so during the public notice period. After this period, relevant admission documentation will be submitted and finalized. Withdrawals requested after the notice period will not be accepted. Please exercise careful consideration.

(3) Appeal Mechanism:

Candidates or supervisors who object to the admission results may file an appeal during the public notice period. The appellant must submit a written appeal and relevant supporting materials to the Graduate Admissions Group of our school under their real name and in an objective manner. The school will investigate and handle the appeal. Anonymous, frauds, or late objections will not be accepted.
