Against the backdrop of profound adjustments in the global landscape and the accelerated evolution of the unprecedented changes unseen in a century, Global South countries have emerged as a necessary and pivotal force in global governance and international cooperation. To actively respond to China’s strategic demand for deep participation in global governance, Tianjin University(TJU) took the lead in establishing the Institute for Global South Studies on September 29, 2024, dedicated to building an interdisciplinary, innovative, and comprehensive academic platform and high-end think tank. Mission and Goals Upholding the development prospect of “Global Vision, Global South Wisdom, and TJU Responsibility,” the Institute takes serving national strategies and boosting the university’s “Double First-Class” construction as its missions. It aspires to emerge as a high-end think tank which is “world-class, distinctively Chinese, and imbued with TJU character.” Integrating academic research, think tank advice, talent cultivation, academic exchanges, and public consulting services, we aim to provide solid academic support and intellectual backing for promoting the construction of a more equitable and inclusive new international order and facilitating the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Research Fields and Interdisciplinary Features The Institute for Global South Studies deeply integrates the interdisciplinary resources of TJU across arts, sciences, engineering, medicine, and other disciplines, covering languages, culture, politics, economics, science and technology, education, and other fields. Leveraging the advantages of multiple languages including English, Japanese, French, Russian, German, Arabic, and Spanish, the Institute relies on interdisciplinary resources including foreign languages and literature, journalism and communication, law, Marxist philosophy, computer science, management science, education, Chinese language and literature, economics, history, and emergency medicine. It focuses on core research areas including Francophone Studies, Shanghai Cooperation Organization Studies, East Asian Studies, and U.S.-India Studies. The Institute houses the Multilingual Public Opinion Big Data and Intelligent Translation Center. It conducts real-time monitoring of political, economic, social developments, and hotspots in key countries and regions of the Global South. By leveraging artificial intelligence and big data technologies, the Center constructs a cross-lingual public opinion analysis and intelligent translation service system, striving to build a leading national strategic think tank and technical engine for public opinion insight and language services related to the Global South. |
