SFLL to hold experience-sharing meeting for application for research projects

To create the strong academic atmosphere and encourage teachers devote to scientific research, the SFLL held an experience-sharing meeting on August 30, 2017 for teachers to communicate about applying for research projects. Mr. Wang Lisong, associate dean of the SFLL, presided over the meeting. At the meeting, three teachers including Ms. Li Chunyan and Ms. Zhang Liming who successfully applied for 2017 National Social Science Fund projects and Ms. Wu Yulian who successfully applied for a project in humanities and social science conducted by the Ministry of Education were invited to share their experience of application. Mr. Zhao Kai, the academic secretary, explained related regulations about research funding at the meeting, and nearly 30 teachers attended the meeting.

As a new comer of SFLL, Ms. Wu Yulian is a representative of young teachers who succeeded in applying for research projects in humanities and social science conducted by the Ministry of Education. During the experience-sharing meeting, she expressed a lot on application-form writing and hew own feelings on the academic research. Also, she put forward some notes while filling out the form, such as avoiding simple introduction to the background when stating the significance and scope of the study; describing the newest theoretical level instead of general literature review; avoiding vague main ideas; clarifying research content; elaborating on the ideas and planning schedule of the subject; quantifying the basis of the research at the beginning instead of fuzzy concepts; and clarifying research results and list details.

Then, Ms. Zhang Liming, who has tried many times for the National Social Science Fund project and finally succeed, shared her own experience to all. Ms. Zhang concluded her experience as two points: one is to choose better topics by studying the list of annual projects declared by the Ministry of Education and combining it with her own research direction; the other is to listen to the views of others and study successful models on the website of Society and Science Department.

After that, Ms. Li Chunyan introduced her experience of application in details and gave several suggestions: teachers may choose the topic which are valuable, innovative, and refer to the guide of research subjects to facilitate further research; teachers may publish several papers related to the chosen subject in the early time to prepare for the application; teachers may fill out the application form rigorously and the layout should be formal; teachers should actively participate in the expert review organized by the school and learn from experts’ suggestions; perseverance is indispensable.

Mr. Zhao Kai interpreted related documents of research fund management of Tianjin University by referring to "The Fund Management Measures of Researches on Humanities and Social Sciences of Tianjin University" and "The Research Fund Management Regulation(Trial) of Tianjin University" to provide financial advisory for teachers.

Finally, Mr. Wang Lisong hoped the experience-sharing meeting could help a lot for teachers applying for the projects and deepening their research. He encouraged every faculty to devote to the scientific research and actively applying for scientific research projects to create better academic atmosphere and improve the scientific research level of the SFLL.
