2017 Tianjin University English Speech Contest (The Qualification Trial of the 20th College Students’ English Speech Contest of Tianjin) Successfully Held

On September 23rd 2017, the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, together with Teaching Affairs Department of Tianjin University, successfully held Tianjin University English Speech Contest on the new campus. The judges of the Contest are: Associate Dean Mr. Chen Dazhong, Associate Dean Mr. Wang Lisong, Head of College English Department I Ms. Jiang Bin, Head of College English DepartmentⅡMr. Zhou Yibing, Deputy Head of Graduate Student English Department Ms. Xiao Zhenfeng, and three faculty members of College English Department I Ms. Duo Jinling, Ms. Ge Liying and Ms. Hao Shan.

Nearly three hundred students participated in the Contest. The hosts tried new ways to attract the students such as introducing WeChat for the students to sign up for the Contest and offering free bus service for students living on the old campus.

During the competition, all participants need to follow a fixed topic - China, A Global View - and present their comprehensive English abilities through delivering speeches. After two rounds of fierce competition, twenty students reached the final.

The final consists of two parts: fixed speech and impromptu speech. In the first part, the participants showed their charm of English speech through excellent performance and great enthusiasm. In the second part, the participants carefully organized their language and smoothly expressed their ideas in a limited time before they launched the impromptu speech. They presented the audience the charm of language as well as the insightful ideas and broad vision. The finalists’ excellent performance won applause from time to time.

In the final, two students won the grand prize, four the first prize, six the second prize, and eight the third prize. The winners of the grand prize went to Shi Yulun and Xu Shuyang. And the first prize went to Zou Yan, Cai Wenting, Wang Chenhui and Guo Shiyu. On behalf of Tianjin University, the six students will compete in the 20th College Students’ English Speech Contest of Tianjin, also known as 2017 “FLTRP Cup” English Public Speaking Contest (Tianjin Division) .

During the Contest, the winners not only received prizes, but also gained friendship and enhanced their English communicative abilities. The contest offered them a good platform to show their English competence and cultivate interests in learning English. What’s more, it also improved the comprehensive proficiency of college students’ spoken English, and further help to promote college English teaching reform.
